Experience Asian Culture and Enjoy the Festival
2020 Asia Culture Week programs have been prepared in cooperation with 10 embassies from countries across Asia, together with the Gwangju International Center, Gwangju Cultural Foundation, Gwangju Koryoin Center, and related organizations.
With the long-term COVID-19 pandemic, people around the world are suffering from “coronavirus blues” due to the invisible distances between countries and people. 2020 Asia Culture Week presents a variety of Asian performances, exhibitions, and experiences that visitors can watch and enjoy, to overcome the current situation through coexistence and solidarity by sharing and communicating various Asian culture.
Please enjoy more than 20 events (performances, exhibitions, participation and festivals, international conferences, and forums) presented online and offline throughout the ACC during the 2020 Asia Culture Week. We hope they bring comfort and joy during these times of struggle.

PerformanceAsia Traditional Orchestra`s New Works Release 2020 (Online)

The Asia Traditional Orchestra has held domestic performances and workshops throughout the last decade, but this year has faced cancellations due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. As such, the ACC has sought out alternative avenues to overcome the limitations on international exchange caused by COVID-19, and has also explored new content. Videos were recorded to bring together 37 performers located in 11 different countries as a complete Asia Traditional Orchestra, and will be released 3 times from October to December.

Like maple leaves changing colors in autumn, one picture book has various colors. The Asian Stories Picture Book, created by the ACC, is filled with old stories passed down from the grasslands and deserts of Central Asia. The Silk Road Story Read Through Music, to be held at Theater 2 on Saturday, October 24th, stems from these small picture books. Pianist NOH Young Shim's accompanying composition will be premiered on the stage with piano performance, experimental video, and young dancers. In harmony with all the components of the stage, the sunlight, and the sound of the wind of Silk Road hidden in the picture book will travel close to us.

The Asia Storytelling musical “I am Koryo-Saram”, portraying the 80 years of history of exile and return of Koryo-Saram, starts from Primorsky Krai and journeys through Central Asia up to South Korea, including the epic of pain and comfort of colonialism and imperialism.

The exhibition Solidarity Spores reexamines the history of the non-alignment movement and the cultural and artistic practices that corresponded to it, and questions how to escape the cracks and conflicts that appear after the globalization of neoliberalism through the spirit of solidarity. In particular, it opens up new hopes and possibilities for a new order, balance, and common history through the practice of art while visualizing historical time and space that the younger generation has not experienced.

The 2020 ACC Regional Asian Artists Exhibition <언·택트 UN·TACT> conveys the contrast of life in a non-face-to-face and non-contact manner among the changes in daily life caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic from the perspective of seven young artists. The exhibition <언·택트 UN·TACT> provides a forum for contemplating the post-COVID-19 era through the work of artists from Korea, China, Japan, and Taiwan, and seeks the possibility of a new standard (new normal) of ‘untact’ and non-contact culture and life.

The Gwangju Biennale Foundation presents MaytoDay, a multinational special exhibition project commemorating the 40th anniversary of the May 18 Democratization Movement. It re-explores the contemporary democratic spirit of 5∙18, not as a fossilized historical event, but something that is still in effect in an international context.

Hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and co-organized by the Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE) and the ACC, the project will discuss the importance of exchange and cooperation between countries in the changing culture and art environment of the post-COVID-19 era, to form a cultural consensus between Korea and ASEAN to present sustainable solidarity and cooperation plans. The two-day event from October 21st to 22nd plans to unfold various stories from 11 countries through forums, performances, and exhibitions under the theme of ASEAN and Korea's Challenge and Innovation.

Domestic and international experts from home and abroad participate in a broad discussion on Asian cultural discourse, on the topic of Transformation of Civilization-New Normal Era, Possibility of Cultural Solidarity, considering daily changes due to the prolonged global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
