13th Gwangju Biennale
GB Commission

Initiated in 2018 by the Gwangju Biennale Foundation, GB Commission invites leading contemporary artists to produce new works in response to Gwangju’s history, architectural artifacts, memories, trauma, traditions, and civil spirit, with the aim of activating social discourses on various issues of our time. GB Commission artworks are either showcased as site-specific or displayed in a particular manner, foregrounding them as contextual and as linked to places that hold the city’s memories. This year’s GB Commission presents nine works in three locations across Gwangju: the former Armed Forces’ Gwangju Hospital, Asia Culture Center, and Gwangju Cultural Foundation.

About
13th Gwangju Biennale
GB Commission
Founded to commemorate the Gwangju Democratization Movement of 1980 and its lasting cultural influence, the Gwangju Biennale has established itself as one of the world’s leading contemporary art events. Throughout its earnest journey providing a platform for art and culture to a global community, the Biennale has not ceased to embrace the Gwangju Spirit on which it was founded. The Gwangju Biennale Foundation strives to reflect on this historical legacy and to embrace a social role, that of contributing to shape the complexion of the future via artistic projects.

In tandem with the Biennale’s founding statement – setting forth the significance of Gwangju’s democratic legacy and its artistic expression – GB Commission was launched in 2018. The GB Commission looks to shed light on the issues of sustainability and longevity rather than limiting its scope to short-term assemblages, and understands that these are themes closely linked to art’s role in society at large. It supports the production of new works, with a focus on giving visibility to diverse issues and discourses on Gwangju’s history, architectural artifacts, memories, trauma, traditions, and civil spirit, among others. From its inaugural edition to the present day, artistic endeavors sensitive to the aesthetics and symbolic values of the city have been produced by eleven international artists.

This year’s GB Commission sees seven international artists— Ho Tzu Nyen, Sung Hwan Kim, Bae Young-hwan, Lee Bul, Minouk Lim, Chiharu Shiota, and Tarek Atoui—create monumental new work; as well as the restaging of two previous GB Commission installations, by Kader Attia and Mike Nelson at three locations across the city. On display at the ACC Creation Space 5 are Sung Hwan Kim’s Hair is a piece of head (2021), and Ho Tzu Nyen’s The 49th Hexagram (2020).
