Asia Culture Center has been identifying and studying major epics in the Asia region that reflect the region’s view on the world to understand the identities and values of Asian cultures and strengthen Asian solidarity and pride. Based on our studies, we creates the ‘Asian Story Road’ that composes six stories according to the routes that the stories spread across Asia. We present < amayana >, a collection of epic tales that spread across Southeast Asia from India, as the first of the six stories.

This exhibition aims to shed light on the cultural value and significance of Asian epics while broadening the public understanding of Southeast and Southwest Asian history and culture through the spatial and architectural materials of < Ramayana > that ACC accumulated over the years. To foster these, the exhibition will also provide diverse media and interactive contents.

The exhibition presents high-tech media art videos, AR experiences, and VR search features to offer a more familiar and comfortable encounter with the ancient and magnificent epic.
What is Ramayana?
< Ramayana > is a key Indian epic that tells the story of Rama. Rama, born as a prince of the Kingdom of Kosla, became the guardian of Dharma as an avatar of Vishnu. The epic has spread across Southeast and Southwest Asia and you can easily spot ‘Kingdom of Ayodhya’ and ‘Rama’ in their culture, relics, and historical scripts. This epic which began to spread 3rd century B.C. has permeated into diverse regions, languages, and customs.

Other than the classic epic of < Ramayana > (Valmiki-Ramayana) that consists of 24,000 verses of Sanskrit poems, about 300 different versions of Ramayana is told in and outside of India. < Ramayana >, as the prototype of all these versions, has been the center of various traditional plays, dances, music, and literature for centuries, and it remains in the temple spaces, festivals, and daily lives of people in the region. Therefore, < Ramayana > leaves a significant footprint in the ideas, ethics, and philosophy of the Indian and South Asian region just as Greek and Roman mythology does in the West.
