The Asia Culture Center (ACC) has been researching the epics of Asian regions rich in oral heritage, and has been developing the content of the “Asian Story Map” based on the research. In November 2021, the ACC first introduced < The Road of Ramayana >, an ancient story that originated from India and spread across Southeast Asia. In December 2022, the ACC presents the second story of this series, < The Road of MANAS > that originated from Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia.
In contrast to previous historical and folklore interpretations that had focused on identifying whether it was fact or fiction, the ACC regarded it as an oral culture art, challenging the infinite possibilities of developing the heroic epic of the grassland into various forms of cultural content.
We hope you enjoy “the Epic of MANAS,” an epic poem that shows the world view of nomads in Central Asia, through various media and experiential content.

What is Manas?
he Epic of MANAS is the story of Manas, a hero who defeated foreign enemies and rebuilt the nation of Kyrgyz ethnicities. The stories of three generations of the Manas family, including his son Semetey and his grandson Seytek, have been transmitted orally to this day. In particular, the epic poem which tells of the struggle for national independence and the founding of the country is considered to be the “embodiment of the Kyrgyz spirit” and is recited throughout the Kyrgyz homeland where the Kyrgyz people live.

Composition

For visitors’ understanding, the summary of the epic of Manas is displayed on the graphic wall, along with illustrations that depict the characters and relationships among them based on the interpretation of the characters by using modern colors. We invite you to the great journey of Manas, the hero of the Kyrgyz people, and his heroic journey that transcends three generations.

The stories of Manas’ combat troops on an expedition, the one-on-one confrontation between Semetei and his enemy Konurbai, and the female warriors who defeat the last invader, Sarbhai, are displayed in an interactive video. As the video reacts to the motion and position of visitors through the sensor, visitors can have hands-on experience on these interesting stories .

We have collected various media information such as photos and videos to understand “the epic of MANAS” in depth. The collected data are available at the kiosk of the Asian Story Map. You can find them in the 3D VR space offering a vivid experience as if in an exhibition hall.
