Asia Culture Museum Collection Series
The collection of the month will feature miniatures of Siwaluh Jabu and Rumah Gadang, the traditional houses of the Sumatra region in Indonesia.
Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world with over 18,000 islands that still maintain the unique cultures and traditional houses of regions.
This house is called rumah adat in Indonesian. Other traditional houses include Siwaluh Jabu in North Sumatra, Rumah Gadang in West Sumatra, Tongkonan in South Sulawesi, and Rumah Aceh in Aceh.
This exhibition has been designed to convey the significance and value of traditional Indonesian houses. We hope you have the opportunity to understand how the people of Indonesia live in harmony with nature through the relics of traditional houses.
Siwaluh Jabu

Siwaluh Jabu is a tribal house of the Karo people of North Sumatra. "Waluh" stands for the number “eight” in the Karo language, indicating the eight rooms of Siwaluh Jabu, and "jabu" means “house.”
The house has a pitched roof with gables on the front and back. Both ends of the roof are decorated with buffalo heads, and a small house-shaped ornament is placed in the middle. The exterior of the house is decorated with geometric patterns.

Rumah Gadang

Rumah Gadang is the traditional house of the Minangkabau people in West Sumatra. Rumah Gadang, which stands for “big house” in Indonesian, is also called Rumah Bagonjong, which means “house with a horn-shaped roof,”
The roof is shaped like three saddles piled together with sharp ends pointing upwards. The exterior is decorated with detailed patterns of flowers and plants.
