Introduction
Fan Letter

The “Fan Letter” exhibition explores the rough yet heartfelt traces of life within Asia’s smooth urban landscapes, as expressed through the “trot” and “ppongjjak” rhythms of Asian music. The exhibition features 14 works, divided into 2 themes, “Trot and Urban Soundscape” and “Asian Ppongjjak Across Boundaries.” These works highlight aspects of urban spaces that have often gone unnoticed or unheard. In addition to the main exhibition, two related exhibitions provide a broader perspective on Asian popular music: the ACC Archive: A Collection of Asian Popular Music explores music from four Asian states that are similar to the Korean trot, while the OASISRECORDS Archive: The History and Evolution of Trot. introduces items related to trot through music and materials released by OASISRECORDS. The two related exhibitions will deepen our understanding of trot and Asian pop music and help us sketch out an image of our past and present. Like its name, the “Fan Letter” is a tribute to the genre of trot, which has helped the residents of Asian urban spaces cope with and inject a measure of joy into their lives, and us ourselves, for having eked out our lives in many unseen spaces. We hope this letter reaches you well and delivers a message of solace.

Related Exhibition
The ACC Archive: A Collection of Asian Popular Music
From 2014 to 2020, the ACC built its “Asian Popular Music Collection” as part of its archiving project under the ACC Archive and Research. This exhibition introduces songs from Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Myanmar that speak to the emotions of the general public about love, parting, and loss.
OASISRECORDS Archive: The History and Evolution of Trot
With the recent return of trot to popularity, we are able to examine the genre not simply as a genre of music but also as a sociocultural phenomenon. This exhibition is designed to explore the stories of ages and emotions captured in trot songs and to investigate how the genre captures the different facets of Korean identity. To that end, the exhibition centers around OASISRECORDS, a record company with the longest history in Korea, and the trot music released by the label.
