About
The International Joint Creation and Production Performance Project has been designed to vitalize the virtuous cycle of ACC’s contents and express the Asian and contemporary characteristic of theater arts. Started with the 2019 Creation and Production Workshop, we plan to hold the showcase in 2020 and put up a global premier in 2021.

The international organization that participates in this project in association with ACC is NTL. NTL was founded by Eugenio Barba, a co-founder of Theater Anthropology and considered one of the three masters of modern theater. It is to be performed by the Korean theater company Mindeulle Co., Ltd., which has been selected through the project posting. Mindeulle specializes in performances that contemplate social issues by interpreting Korean movements.
NTL and Mindeulle shared the pre-production stage and prepared this showcase in a twin-package joint production in which two different theatrical themes and images were produced based on one literature text.

To express literature in theater language, we translate expressions of the actors into langue du corps, and aim to develop Asian theater creation methodology.
Program
Plot
Kien is a Vietnamese War veteran and is living as an author in Hanoi after the war. For him, the present, the unconscious, and the memories of the past always follow like an illusion.
Kien had a lover, Phượng, whom he has been in relationship since the young age of 16.
“We will never be apart. Right, Kien? We will die together, even in death.”
But he and Phượng are reunited after the war, and Kien’s illness grows worse. In the midst of war, where one must die to save another? What happens between Kien and Phượng? Can Kien bring himself to face the shards of memories of the ghosts that roam the chaos?
Original work: < The Sorrow of War > by Bảo Ninh
  • The winner of Asian Literature Award of 2018 the 2nd Asian Literature Festival / Asia Cultural Center
  • 1997 Denmark ALOA Prize Foreign Literature Award
  • 1995 London “Independent” Translated Literature Award
  • 1991 Vietnamese Writers' Association Best Work Award
< The Sorrow of War > (Theater Company Mindeulle)
Aim of adaptation (Song Inhyeon)
The original work [The Sorrow of War] is set in the Vietnam War and includes contrasting or conflicting dialectic relationships of the survivors and the dead, love and farewell, life and death, memories and oblivion, consciousness and unconsciousness, harmony and incongruity, the lake of life and blood-soaked jungles. Especially in the cruelty of war where someone must kill in order to survive, I thought that both the living and the dead were souls in suffering. So I interpreted the Korean Gut, the shamanic rituals, especially the structure and each song of the ritual to convey the content and meaning of the original work. I hope this to be a ceremony that can soothe the souls hurt by war and violence.
Aim of Joint Direction (Song Inhyeon, Lee Jinyeop, and Ahn Gyeonghee)
We attempted to graft our movements with Physical Score, the acting method of NTL (Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium-Odin Teatret) which is unfamiliar to the Korean theatrical community.
The process of turning the individual lives into the images of physical movements require a high degree of training and demanded much time, but also meant the inner growth of individual cast members.
This process, we believe, will be an opportunity to develop Asian langue du corps into the international theatrical language.
While staying true to the original work and to preserve the spirit of Gwangju, we plan to express the images and symbols of humankind’s yearning for peace.
< Sorrow and Seeds > (NTL) - Aim for Joint Adaptation and Direction (Kai Bredholt and Lee Dongil)
Intention of Joint Adaptation
War and its struggles leave us much sorrows. We remember the sorrow left for us and go on with our lives, sowing the seeds of love and humanity. We contemplate love for humankind from the unique perspective of Asian culture and the universal cultural anthropological perspective. We make the story of “war and love” of this moment from the perspective of dramaturgy. We see the war we fight all around the world. We ask what have war and struggles left us.
Intention of Joint Direction
The play portrays a Northern European spirit and Asian shaman character that travel back and forth between ancient cities, jungles, and present day cities, through the space and time of chaos and cosmos. Bartering with actors to share their experiences and imagination and creating scenes in the form of a physical score is an agonizing and incredible process. Eurasian traditional arts and patterns such as Korean, Vietnamese, and Danish, costumes, martial arts, folk songs and pop songs, etc., as well as sunflower seeds were used to produce the stage in abstract and simple images. We boldly experimented with the convergence of various production techniques such as epic distance, presence, real actions, opposition, density, paradoxical thinking, acrobatics, and Asian traditional acting. We used the secret room technique to create a poetic text that centers around the inspiration of actors and ideas. We strove to create a Eurasian theater language where live music, optimized sound, digilog-type stage technique design, maximization of local community engagement through bartering, and the traditions and modern elements are harmonized.
