Introduction
A special program to commemorate the week of the May 18 Democracy Movement! Based on the original film Peppermint Candy by Lee Chang-dong,
this grand opera sings the story of Gwangju that May, and its light and shadows!
The Third Story
박하사탕
The opera Peppermint Candy is a verismo tragedy opera based on the film Peppermint Candy, directed by Lee Chang-dong, and depicts the love and downfall of a man who was sent to put down the May 18 Democracy Movement as a paratrooper in 1980. It is, at the same time, a human drama that depicts those who shared life beyond the terror of death.

Its lines are delivered in clear Korean and Jeolla dialect, while its speedy plot coexists with musical excellence, and complex and detailed exploration of character motivations. The protest in front of the Provincial Government Square is realized as an epic choir and orchestral piece featuring the well-known song “Morning Dew”by Kim Min-ki.

If the source materials focus on the character Yeong-ho, and through that examine how overwhelming violence damages and destroys a person, the opera Peppermint Candy brings together the individualities of Yeong-ho and others in a richly defined picture. It also focuses on bringing to stage the social community of Gwangju in May 1980 and its steadfast refusal to give up its life in the face of death.
Content
Lee Kun-yong, the former head of Seoul Metropolitan Opera and one of the giants in the Korean creative music scene, is the composer and the artistic director of this production. Director Cho Gwang-hwa brings his expertise in both the musical and theatrical stages as the director and writer, while Artistic Director Yun Ho-gen, whose musical leadership has been recognized on the European stage, takes the conductor’s baton.

The cast is a star-studded one, featuring many of the leading vocalists of our time. Kim Yeong-ho, an innocent young man whose life is shattered by his deployment as a paratrooper to Gwangju, is played by the tenor Oliver Kook of Volksoper Wien fame and tenor Yoon Byung-kil, who performed on European stages before joining the Korea National Opera.

The role of Soon-im, Yeong-ho’s first love, is played by soprano Kim Soon-young, a veteran of musical and opera stages, and soprano Yoon Sangah, a Gwangju-born rising diva of the Korea National Opera.

Detective Kang, Yeong-ho’s superior in the paratrooper unit who becomes a brutal torturer, is played by baritones Na Gunyong and Choi Byung-hyuk. Park Myeong-sook, a college student who is bound to Yeong-ho’s tragic fate, is played by soprano Jung Juhee and Sharon Kim.
