The Seventh Story
Experience the play Treasure Island on video
A century-old tale of adventure and excitement!
“A boy’s dream becomes a reality.”
The play Treasure Island is based on the novel of the same title by Robert Louis Stevenson, the mind behind Jekyll and Hyde. The story was written not to teach morals but to have fun. It is a thrilling and engaging tale of Jim Hawkins, an innkeeper’s son, and his adventures.
Opposing him is John Silver, an antagonist whose lethal charms have won him a well-deserved seat on the rogues’ gallery of memorable villains, leading a cast of unique and exciting characters. The plot unfolds as a tense serial, capturing a boy’s adventures in braving a treacherous journey with rebelliousness and courage. These strengths have established the novel as a fantastic and engaging “fun” novel, a worthy addition to the list of “The 100 greatest novels of all time.” This “treasure island” of a story is coming to the Asia Culture Center (ACC) this summer as a video screened on the ACC Theater 3’s massive screen.
An extraordinary imagination never seen before meets thrilling rock-and-roll to recreate the Treasure Island once more.
Director Lee Dae-woong has presided over the adaptation of novels like The Jungle Book and I am a Cat with unique creativity and an excellent directorial capacity, opening a new horizon for audiences. With Lee at Treasure Island’s proverbial helm, he recreates the source material into a timeless piece that brings the old with a vintage flair into a new and exciting perspective.
Nine actors weave the magic of movement and language onstage. The four-piece band (guitar, bass, keyboard, and drums) provides the soundtrack that strikes a chord directly into the heart and adds dynamism and the thrill of adventure. As Robert Louis Stevenson said, “Fiction is to grown men what play is to the child.” The novel is transformed into a fun play, capturing the magic of embarking on an adventure from the stage to the screen.
Synopsis
Jim Hawkins lives a quiet life running the family inn with his parents. One day, an old sea captain comes to the inn, but he passes away under mysterious circumstances. The old captain left behind a package that contained a treasure map. Jim goes to Dr. Livesey and Mr. Trelawney, a wealthy landowner, and the two men assemble a crew of 26 men to search for the treasure, led by Captain Smollett, with the cook John Silver among the crew. The voyage proves relatively smooth until one day, Jim overhears John Silver conspiring with his fellow pirates to take the treasure for themselves.
