Introduction
Witness a selection of performances of Korea onscreen!
ACC Wednesday Theater with Seoul Arts Center’s “SAC On Screen”
The 16th Story
An onscreen ballet performance of “The Nutcracker”
A Timeless Masterpiece by the Korean National Ballet
A romantic fairytale in December, “The Nutcracker”
The ACC Wednesday Theater will feature the Korean National Ballet’s performance of a timeless masterpiece, “The Nutcracker,” this December, which you shouldn’t miss. This time, the choreographic version of the “living legend” Yuri Grigorovich, who led the Russian Bolshoi Ballet for 33 years, will be screened; the version premiered in 1966 at the Bolshoi Theater. It will guide the audience of all ages to the fantastic fairytale world with its grand and spectacular composition, high-level choreography, charming stage design, and familiar story.

Tchaikovsky’s music, with great charms unique to Russia, and Grigorovich’s colorful and splendid choreography create a synergy to present the audience with an enjoyable time for both their eyes and ears.
Prelude The street on the Christmas eve
On Christmas eve, there’s a Christmas party at Marie’s house. Family and friends head to Marie’s house for the party.
Act 1, scene 1 The Christmas party in the living room
A joyful party begins under a Christmas tree. At that time, Drosselmeyer, Marie’s godfather, enters in a mask. He gives gifts to Marie and Fritz, of which Marie’s gift is a wooden Nutcracker. But mischievous Fritz wants the Nutcracker, too, and accidentally breaks it.
Act 1, scene 2 Marie’s living room, midnight
In the middle of the night, Marie comes downstairs, worried about her Nutcracker. In her dream, Drosselmeyer appears as a magician. Suddenly, the Christmas tree in the living room starts growing, and dolls from various countries placed under the tree, as well as the Nutcracker, come to life and start moving. Unexpectedly, mice appeared and threatened the dolls. The Nutcracker leads the toy dolls to a fight against the mice. When the Nutcracker falls into danger in the battle against the Mouse King, Marie throws a lighted candle to the Mouse King, as Drosselmeyer told her, destroying the army of mice. When Marie and the dolls pick up the fallen Nutcracker, the Nutcracker turns into a prince and suggests Marie go on a fantastic trip to Christmas Land. On their way to Christmas Land, they meet magic snowflakes and dance with them, sail through land under the sea in a ship, and go up to the sky. The toy dolls followed Marie and the prince.
Act 2 Christmas Land
An enormous shining star gets closer to Marie and the prince as they reach the top of the Christmas tree. Meanwhile, the mice that chased them suddenly appear and have a battle with them again, but the prince takes an easy victory. Marie and the prince are joyous with the victory, and the dolls perform dances of their countries. After the Spanish, Indian, Chinese, Russian, and French dances, the famous flower waltz is performed. Finally, a duo dance of Marie and the prince for their wedding makes a finale.
Epilogue Christmas morning
Marie wakes up to find out that everything has been a dream. She holds the Nutcracker in her arms and greets the Christmas morning, thinking of the beautiful dream she had the previous night.
