Emerson String Quartet
Winner of nine Grammy Awards and three Gramophone Awards, and the first chamber orchestra to win the Avery Fisher Prize!
Emerson String Quartet's first performance in Korea this year
“Great insight and cohesiveness. Always fascinating.”
- The New York Times
“Undoubtedly the world's best chamber music orchestra”
- Fortune
The Emerson String Quartet, which has been reputed as one of the best chamber orchestra in the 21st century, will bid farewell to us this year. Their visit to Korea in May is getting more attention because it will be a farewell tour for them.

The members of the Emerson String Quartet maximize the harmony of sound by using instruments made by the same manufacturer and further highlight their outstanding ensemble skills. Eugene Drucker assessed an instrument made by Samuel Zygmuntowicz, saying, "plays better than Stradivarius in a big hall like Carnegie Hall." He added, “There is more power and excitement.”

Exactly after 10 years after all members of the Emerson String Quartet were gathered, they reached the top. They won the Grammy Awards for Best Chamber Music Performance and Best Classical Album with their Bartok String Quartets, released in 1989 by Deutsche Grammophon, and even received a Gramophone Classical Music Award.
The string quartet was beloved by a wide range of enthusiasts since it encompassed music of all times and all regions. In 2010, the Emerson String Quartet received the Avery Fisher Prize, which is granted to the most outstanding musician in the United States; and was also honored with being inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame and Museum, which honors the people who have contributed to American music in the United States. In 2015, they also received the Richard J. Bogomolny Award, which is granted to a performer who has made the most lasting and important contributions to the field of chamber music through long-term performance. The Emerson String Quartet winning this award is a monumental achievement in the history of the string quartet.

They have now decided to devote themselves to solo performance and education at the Emerson String Quartet Institute at Stony Brook University. At the last moment of their great journey to be held in Gwangju, Korea on May 25, 2023, the names of giants such as Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven will be engraved and completed with classical music, which is the origin of string quartets. It will be a musical moment that will be deeply engraved in our memories and hearts.

Emerson String Quartet Emerson String Quartet
Established in 1976 after an American philosopher Waldo Emerson (1803–1882) in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the founding of the United States, the Emerson String Quartet has won nine Grammy Awards (including two for Best Classical Album), three Gramophone Awards, and also became the first chamber orchestra who received the Avery Fisher Prize, which is known as one of the most honorable music awards in the United States. As such, they are one of the most unrivaled and legendary chamber orchestra in history.

They have been recognized as an ensemble that presented elegant classical music with excellent technique, insight and cohesiveness in their own way, performing works without distinguishing first and second violins to realize the composers’ intentions and creating dramatic effects in each arrangement. They released a total of 33 albums under world-class music labels including Sony Classical and Deutsche Grammophon with organic performance and perfect harmony. Recently, they have performed vigorously as one of the standing groups of the Smithsonian Associates in Washington D.C. and participated in the Great Performers series at Lincoln Center. The Emerson String Quartet will present a world tour in the 2022–2023 season, which will be their farewell tour after 47 years of performance.
