Introduction
ACC Theater for All
A Physical Theater with Sticks – Horned Oni
“Although we look different, can we still be friends?”
“A Physical Theater with Sticks – Horned Oni” is an object and physical theater piece featuring a reinterpretation of the emotional and entertaining Japanese children’s story “Red Oni Who Cried” by Hirosuke Hamada. It unfolds around a ball whose real value becomes clear only when passed back and forth, combining the accessibility of children’s theater with artistic depth.
Plot
In a deep, unknown forest, a ball suddenly flies in.
The Red Oni searches for a friend to play with,
but a woodcutter, watching from a distance, suspects that the Red Oni is trying to deceive and eat humans!
As the woodcutter runs away in fear, the Red Oni is disappointed.
“I just wanted to play…”
At that moment, a new friend, the Blue Oni, unexpectedly suggests a quirky yet clever way to clear up misunderstandings.
Can the Red Oni finally play ball with humans?
* “Oni (オニ)” is a Japanese yokai (supernatural creature). While commonly translated as “goblin” in Korea, the Japanese Oni differs significantly from the Korean dokkaebi (goblin).
For this production, we opted to keep “oni” as is to allow audiences to imagine it as a fearsome, unfamiliar figure rather than translating it to “goblin.”
