2019 ACC Design Contest

This summer, the ACC Design Contest returns for another iteration. The contest is aimed at promoting the diversity of the ACC’s cultural merchandise. With this year’s contest in particular, the ACC seeks to offer exciting experiences to all participants and grant them opportunities to showcase their artistic and creative prowess aligned with their interest in the ACC. The contest is open to all citizens, we are looking forward to creative submissions from all interested people.

1. Contest Outline

  • Title: 2019 ACC Design Contest
  • Goal: To discover designs with high commercial value using the ACC’srepresentative images or texts.
  • To promote the ACC through the contest and the related events, and create a new type of forum for participation
  • Purpose: To develop merchandise based on the selected 2D designs, and ultimately contribute to raising the ACC’s revenues
  • Benefits: The winners will be invited to take part in the prototype development process under the guidance of expert mentors. The awards ceremony and the tie-in exhibition will be planned and executed in alignment with the goals of the contest.
  • ※ Awards ceremony: an open-format event, combined with lectures on related topics; Exhibition: a showroom-type program that promotes visitors’ self-directed admiration of the prototypes on display

  • Organized and implemented by the Asia Culture Center
  • Sponsors and partners: the Asia Culture Institute, Gwangju Metropolitan City, Gwangju Federation of Handcrafts Cooperatives, Bitgoeul Creative Craft Village, Gwangju Design Center
  • Dates: (Contest Period) July 1 (Mon.)–August 21 (Wed.), 2019 / (Submission) August 12 (Mon.)–21 (Wed.) 24:00, 2019 (11 days)
  • Result announcement: September 2, 2019 (Mon.) ※ Notified to individual winners, and posted at the ACC website and ACC social network service accounts
  • Awards ceremony: October 4, 2019 (Fri.), 5:00 p.m. (tentative) International Conference Room, Asia Culture Center
  • Exhibition: October 4 (Fri.)–November 15, 2019 (Fri.) / Lobby, Library Park, Asia Culture Center
  • ※ The awards ceremony and exhibition dates are subject to change, in which case the ACC will notify individual winners.
  • ※ Shipment of prototypes and other events are scheduled on or after November 16 (Sat.).

2. Eligibility

  • Any individual or group interested in the ACC (no nationality restriction)
  • ※ The contest is open to both individual and group participation. However, all applicants are required to use their real names (in case of a group, the real name of one representative).
  • An applicant should be willing to participate in the mentoring program (2 sessions) for prototype development.

3. Contest Details

  • (Overarching Theme) 2D designs that use the ACC’s representative images and phrases
  • “Image” is not narrowly defined. Each applicant can freely design their own image
  • (Sub-topics) An applicant may choose any combination of areas and contents proposed below. However, an applicant may only submit up to 2 works
  • Choose one of the three areas (1 to 3), and one of the five contents (A to E)

C. Works expressing the diversity or individual characteristics of the five sections of the center
* 5 sections: ACC Culture Exchange - Human Rights, Democracy, and Peace; ACC Children - key characters; ACC Archive and Research - resources on Asian cultures; ACC Creation and ACC Theater - contemporary exhibitions and programs that accentuate Asianness or are experimental
 
D. Aesthetic images adapted from photographs of the center
 
E. Works that highlight the connection between the ACC and Gwangju’s landmarks (Mudeungsan Mountain, Gwangjueupseong Site, Democracy Plaza Fountain, Painting Tree, etc.)
Stationeries, everyday goods, fabrics, and home supplies
 
* Ballpoint pens, pencils, notes, memos, bookmarks, umbrellas, backpacks, eco bags, T-shirts, socks, cushions, glasses, fabric posters, DIY items, etc.
 
Submit 1 to 3 ideas (drafts) about merchandise
 
※ The above guidelines are intended to serve as examples only. Each applicant can develop their designs as they see fit, and their designs are likely to go through significant changes during the mentoring process and depending on the layout of the exhibition hall (showroom). However, each applicant is advised to align their submissions with the intention reflected in the above guidelines.

4. Required Forms

  • Application Form and Consent Forms: must include the titles, design themes and concepts, and descriptions of proposed merchandise
  • ※ The forms are available for download at the “ACC News” menu at the ACC website (www.acc.go.kr). The forms must be submitted in the PDF format.
  • Submission files : A4, color, resolution 300 dpi or higher, to be submitted both in JPEG and the PDF formats, all files grouped in a single compressed file
  • Number of submissions: up to 2 submissions per applicant *If two works from the same participant are considered for awards, only the submission with the higher score will be selected.

5. Restrictions

  • Each submission should be an original work previously unreleased in or outside of Korea. We are looking for only designs for cultural merchandise that can be mass-produced.
  • Even after an applicant receives a prize, he/she may have to forfeit the prize if the applicant’s submission is found to fall under any of the following. In such cases, the applicant must return all award certificates, plaques, and money that he/she received. The applicants bear all legal responsibilities for their submissions.
  • A design that does not satisfy the requirements below
  • A work previously submitted to another contest in or outside of Korea that was selected for awards
  • A work found to be an imitation or a plagiarized work
  • A work associated with any legal issue including intellectual property rights.

6. Evaluation Criteria

7. Required Documents and Application Process

  • 1 Copyright Consent Form (Form No. 3; must be signed by the applicant in his/her handwriting)
  • Submission file (format: 1 JPEG file and 1 PDF file for each submission)
  • ※ Winners will be asked to provide additional high-resolution files for panels (original size or A2).
  • ※ During the mentoring program, additional work files may be required for prototype development.
  • ※ Forms: Fill out the word files linked in the public notice at the ACC website, and convert them to a PDF files to submit.

  • You can apply online by sending the files to the appliation email address (acc.d.contest@gmail.com). You can also apply offline at the ACC. Please see “10. Contact Info” for further details.
  • The Application Form, the required documents, and the submission files should be compressed into a single zip file.
  • File name format: ‘sub-topic_applicant’s name_MMDDYY’ (sample: Pattern Image_ Asia_112516)

8. Prizes

  • Prize Overview: Awarded to 8 or more applicants (teams) / Total prize money: KRW 12 million
  • ※ The ACC will select some of the winners’ works for mentoring and prototype development, to be used for exhibitions or merchandise development at the ACC in the future.

9. Caution

  • Copyright Guide
  • A submitter retains the copyright to his/her submissions.
  • However, the ACC reserves the right to use and manage the submitted works as per the purpose of the competition.
  • The ACC may use the submitted works to develop merchandise or create and distribute promotional material, digital material, exhibition material and other publications of the ACC.
  • The intellectual property rights in the selected works may be transferred to the ACC subject to payment of prize money.
  • The scope and scale, and other details about the transfer, will be discussed between the winners and the ACC in the future.
  • Important Notes
  • After the application closes, an applicant may not modify or replace previously submitted documents.
  • The organizer may change the contest schedule, and applicants may not object to such changes.
  • A submission with any marking that can be used to identify the submitter will be rejected. Even if such work is received, it will not be considered in the evaluation process.
