Asia Culture Center(ACC) is a platform for creation and research that supports new ideas, expansion and interdisciplinary research and exchange. This year, ACC invites researchers and creators living in Korea to its ACC_R Residency programs.

Theme Biophilia and beyond
In 2020, ACC_R Residency explored the theme “Biophilia” departing from the sense of awe in the diversity of lives and coevolution of human and nature. In 2021, it expands the discussion; focusing on the agency of all lives and non-human others, it attempts to address the realm beyond humans. It rethinks the relationship between the world, art and technology from an ecological perspective and examines new motives for a better life in the post-human era.
Contemporary dance that can suggest contemporary Asian perspectives, values and discourse
Eligibility
  • Creators including artists, researchers and engineers who can develop and realize art & technology-based projects focusing on this year’s theme
  • Engineers, technicians, technological researchers who can conduct technological research focusing on art & technology
  • Academic researchers and critics in fields of humanities, social studies, natural science (e.g. philosophy, critique, social studies, science, etc.)
  • Asian craftsmen or designers who can create craft work
  • Asian choreographers with potential and experiences of traditional and/or contemporary dance
Requirements
  • Creators with potential and maximum 3 years of experience in the fields of convergence of art and science, art, media, engineering, biotech etc.
  • Creators who have done at least one or more projects (e.g. exhibition)
  • Creators with minimum 3 years of experience in the fields of convergence of art and science, art, media, engineering, biotech etc.
  • Creators who have multiple experiences of projects (e.g. exhibition)
  • Engineers, technicians and researchers with potential and minimum 3-year experience in engineering, media technology, biotechnology or convergence of art and science
  • Those who can conduct technological research and present research outcomes
  • Experience of minimum 5 years
  • Those who have released or published at least 3 thesis, critics and/or publications
  • Those who can conduct in-depth research and write incorporating art and culture
  • Experience of minimum 5 years
  • Those who have released or published at least 3 thesis, critics and/or publications
  • Those who can write critique of artists including ACC_R Creators·Design participants
  • Experience of minimum 5 years
  • Those who can create artworks reflecting the theme of ACC_R based on Asian craft skills (traditional materials and techniques)
  • Choreographer who has done minimum 3 works
  • A choreographer who can do research, create and showcase works during the 2-month residency
  • Those who can communicate in English
Common Requirements Applicant must be living in South Korea from the first day of the residency program.
As for foreigners, visa must be valid till the end of the residency

2. Schedule

  • Open call: 24th May ~ 20th June, 2021 ※Application submission from 10:00. Submission closes at 23:59. Korean Time
  • Document review: 28th June ~ 2nd July, 2021
  • Short list announcement: 7th July, 2021
  • Interview: 21st July ~ 26th July, 2021
  • Final announcement of participants: 30th July, 2021

4. Mandatory obligations for participants

  • To submit proof of a negative COVID-19 test (PCR)
  • To submit accident or travel insurance certificate covering the residency period
  • To reside in Gwangju (minimum 12 days per month) and conduct project based on the provided studio space
  • To take part in ACC_R exchange programs (including orientation, workshop, research tour and networking programs)
  • To submit residency outcomes and make showcases or presentations (further information below)

6. Selection

  • Selection criteria: designated selection committee will select the participant who has submitted the project plan and portfolio that embody the idea and fit for the purpose of the program
  • Selection process: (1st) Document review → (2nd) PT and interview → Final selection and announcement (30th July)

8. Submission Method: Email submission

  • Applications should be received by 23:59 KST(Korean Standard Time) on the due date/ For further information, please refer to the application guidelines

9. Notice

  • Any deliberate omission or false information found in the application may lead to revocation of selection or other disadvantages.
  • The project that has been already supported by ACC or another institution will not be considered. If such a case is found later, the selection can be revoked.
  • Candidates who are or will be participating in another residency program during this program cannot apply.
  • Applicants who have participated the same program twice in the past cannot apply.
  • The participant is fully liable for any intellectual property rights dispute with third parties.
  • ※ Selection will be revoked if the selected applicant is found to have used another person’s idea without permission or infringed another person’s intellectual property rights
  • Participants must follow the general regulations and confirm this by signing a separate agreement.
  • Policy regarding the copyright of the work differs by program.
