13th Gwangju Biennale
GB Commission

Initiated in 2018 by the Gwangju Biennale Foundation, GB Commission invites leading contemporary artists to produce new works in response to Gwangju’s history, architectural artifacts, memories, trauma, traditions, and civil spirit, with the aim of activating social discourses on various issues of our time. GB Commission artworks are either showcased as site-specific or displayed in a particular manner, foregrounding them as contextual and as linked to places that hold the city’s memories. This year’s GB Commission presents nine works in three locations across Gwangju: the former Armed Forces’ Gwangju Hospital, Asia Culture Center, and Gwangju Cultural Foundation.

    13th Gwangju Biennale
Pavilion Project 《Double Echoing》

Curated by Wu Dar-Kuen, the senior curator of Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab, the collaborative project Double Echoing uses art to explore the democratic developments and pursuit of human rights, freedom and universal values in both Taiwan and South Korea. Double Echoing examines the development of the two East Asian democracies, whose histories bear close resemblances. Fourteen Taiwanese and Korean artists, in eight groups dedicated to human rights, political art and other universal issues, will share the stage at Gwangju’s ACC Creation Space 5. A highlight of the exhibition is the onsite display of pieces from the Green Island Human Rights Art Festival, a joint commission with the NHRM.

    More

    2020 ACC Gwangju-Asia Artists Exhibition < UN·TACT >

The ACC has put together a program featuring seven young artists and their artistic comments on “un·tact” culture. The 2020 ACC Gwangju-Asia Artists Exhibition < UN·TACT > highlights the changes in daily experiences brought on by the global COVID-19 pandemic, and the light and dark sides of the new non-face-to-face, or “un·tact.” lifestyle, through the eyes of the seven artists. Through the works of these artists from Korea, China, Japan, and Taiwan, the exhibition creates a forum for reflecting on the post-COVID-19 world while simultaneously seeking the possibilities of the “new normal” of un·tact life and culture, which features both convenient disconnect and expanded communication.
