ACC Residency × ACC Sound Art Lab
The Asia Culture Center (ACC) is seeking participants for its 2023 ACC Residency. ACC is an international artistic creation and production center that explores the new contemporariness in Asia. Asian attitudes of engagement with real-world situations have been passed down as a spirit of artistic creation, as new technologies and artistic languages are being used today to suggest alternatives for our current reality and possibilities for future ways of life. Each year, the ACC Residency reviews the timeliest real-world issues to select a research topic. The reorganized 2023 residency program is also being carried out in conjunction with the ACC Sound Art Lab. The “Futures of Listening” intermediate- to long-term lab project is being presented as one of the residency’s creative support programs. The program is open to participants from every field of creative endeavor, including researchers, artists, creators, and technicians who are making their first attempts at soundscapes. After taking part in “Futures of Listening,” participants with creative approaches to thinking and open-minded attitudes can give expression to their new ideas and go through a process of experimentation, after which the content will be presented at a showcase event. The ACC Residency is looking to do more than simply providing a creative environment to support artists. It seeks to work together in creating the sort of novel, diverse content that can only be achieved at ACC. We look forward to hearing from prospective participants who are interested in taking part with an open mind.

2. Program Details
  • ‘23 creation/production theme: Futures of Listening
The 2023 Sound Art Lab is launching “Futures of Listening,” a sound art project researching the sounds of Asia. Taking place over a period of several years, this project examines the cultural and geographic relationships of sounds and envisions the future of creative arts based on research into alternative contemporary values and perceptions.
The relationship between sound and space has been a focus of extensive research in areas including art, science, and the humanities. The city in particular is a space that reflects our human society, and its structural phenomena offer another potential avenue for investigating contemporary civilization. In areas such as architecture and urban design that are rooted chiefly in visual epistemology, sound has been either outright excluded or approached only in very limited fashion. Over the past 10 years, scholars have begun paying more attention to the relationship between cities and sound, and their research has explored the creative potential for the role of sound.
As part of this project, the ACC Sound Art Lab is conducting research into sound in conjunction with the Acc Residency program, with a focus on Asian cities. A number of Asian cities have undergone rapid urbanization under Western influence, and people’s concept of “listening” to sound has swiftly changed as well. For example, research has shown that noise levels in Asian cities that have undergone Westernization and industrialization (especially in South, Southeast, and East Asia) are far higher than those in (West Asian) countries that have not. Such environments not only give rise to differences in acoustic perceptions among those cities’ residents but also powerfully influence their nature and the forms of their culture and art. In researching these cities’ soundscapes, we hope to shed new light on people’s evolving concepts of “listening” and to present alternative values and the future of creative arts from a perspective of auditory post-colonialism.
