2023 Asia Dance Community
The ACC's Asia Dance Community is a 2023 international exchange program consisting of screendance and a symposium organized with 14 member states. The Asia Screendance screening that will take place from Sep. 22 to 24 will feature unique dance performances of Southeast Asia and South Asia. The screening will also feature traditional dances of Bangladesh and Bollywood cinema with entertaining dance sequences, in celebration of Korea’s 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties with Bangladesh and India.

The symposium will introduce Korea’s Talchum, Cambodia's Lkhon Khol, and other mask dances of Asia, including Bangladesh and Nepal. To celebrate Talchum being listed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2022, the symposium aims to shed light on the values and meaning of masked dances, which are a common practice in Asia.
Asia Dance Community
Asia Dance Community at the ACC has been making efforts for exchange with Asian dancers since 2011. Through various exchange programs, such as workshops, performances, conferences, developing repertoires, and choreographer labs, we have been establishing a hub where dancers of Asia can get together.
* Participating countries:
Malaysia, Laos, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Bhutan, Brunei, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand, Philippines, Korea

ACC Asia Dance Community Symposium
Mask - Dance, Transformation and Conversation
“Mask - Dance, Transformation, and Conversation” is the theme of the 2023 Asia Dance Community Symposium.
The 2023 Asia Dance Community Symposium is organized to discuss the various examples of Asian mask dances. Through masks, we look at each other, pose for transformation, and communicate. Witness various mask dances of Asia and join the conversations.

We intend to share different mask dances of Asia, as well as their social roles and meanings. Participants can seek ways to preserve Asian dance resources and spread Asian cultural diversity. We will also hold a conversation on contemporary interpretation of mask dance, ways for utilization, as well as ways for globalization and international cooperation.

<Kali Kachi: Kali, Black Goddess's Dance> Shadhona
“Kali Nach” or “Kali Nritya” is a popular dance in different parts of Bengal among the Hindus wearing the mask of Kali or wearing colored ink. Everywhere, it is the men who wear Kali and dance.
After the dance begins, the smoke of the Dhuna wafts across the space, and the dance becomes wilder as the dance culminates in the dance of Shatruvadha.
<Writing Using> Choreographer Ahn Ae-sun Korea National Contemporary Dance Company
“Writing Using” was recognized for the unique and powerful movements of dancers, variations of stage equipment, and an excellent spatial design after its first performance in 2022. The performance has returned as a repertoire in 2023. It follows the process of how the personal history, memory, image, and environment individualize common movements. Motions gathered from our every day lives are recreated as novel movements through the bodies of dancers.
Choreographer Ahn Ae-sun who served as the joint chair of the Asia Dance Community of the ACC (2013-2022) strived to develop works that study the shared values of Asia with member countries through “Here There,” “Cheok,” etc.
She also revealed works such as “Bul-ssang,” “Already Not Yet,” and “Zero One Dimension” based on contemporary themes during her appointment as the artistic director for the Korea National Contemporary Dance Company (2013-2016).
