Introduction
ASIA SOUND ARCHIVE Project
The “ASIA SOUND ARCHIVE” Project explores the sounds of Asia, including Korea, from the perspective of library music*. By producing albums on vinyl/LP records, the project aims to collect and document the contemporary sounds of Asia, capturing the essence of “the present” and “the now.”

In collaboration with Oasis Records, the oldest record company in Korea, the project will reintroduce 10 reissued records from the 1960s and 1970s, examining the trends of popular music and jazz albums from that era.

In addition, as a medium to connect the project’s identity and disseminate its message to the public, collaborative products with “DLAC” and subculture brand BALANSA (Sound Shop BALANSA) will be available the ACC Culture Shop and the pop-up store (Welcome Records).
  • Library music refers to music and albums created for “specific purposes” during the golden age of the audiovisual industry in the 1960s and 1970s, primarily in Europe. These albums were made for insertion into TV shows, radio, films, and advertisements, akin to “ready-to-wear” clothing. This genre of music pursued specific concepts and styles, such as “music for the mood of the night” and “modern jazz style action music,” while also being utilized to fit its intended purpose.

Project Album
Project Album
“A Tribute to the Korean Sound ‘Prophesied’ by 1970s Korean Jazz.”
The title of this project album, “The Prophet (though the Korean title ‘Ye-eon’ means prophecy),” stems from the fact that, despite the challenging environment for producing “authentic” jazz records within the context of Korean light music and jazz in the 1960s and 1970s, there were works that “prophesied” the creation of new glocal music by blending traditional Korean music with jazz and contemporary music.

This album is primarily influenced and inspired by the works of Lee Pan-geun and other musicians, composers, and arrangers who navigated between jazz, light music, and popular songs during that era, leaving a significant legacy. It draws on the “prophecy” of these artists, who created uniquely Korean sounds and texts.

In conjunction with the ASIA SOUND ARCHIVE Project, we are introducing collaborative products with the National Asian Cultural Center’s cultural goods brand “DLAC” and the Busan-based subculture brand BALANSA (Sound Shop BALANSA).

BALANSA has cultivated a strong following by engaging in diverse collaborations with local brands and shops across Asia, including Japan, Thailand, and China.

Through this collaboration, we have created a new identity by combining the logos of both brands with the project title. This new identity is featured on a range of products, including t-shirts, hats, and accessories, available at the National Asian Cultural Center’s goods store, “DLAC.”
