“Manas” is the legendary hero in the epic trilogy of “Manas, Semetey, and Seytek.” This trilogy begins with the chronicles of Manas, a hero who united numerous tribes into one nation, and his bloodline continues to his son Semetey and grandson Seytek. This extensive oral record of more than 500,000 lines present the religious culture and life of the Kyrgyz people.

This exhibition features artworks by Asanaliev Mairamkul Musabi* and Theodor Herzen**, Kyrgyz artists, depicting Manas. Manas is a key symbol of pride and identity of the Kyrgyz people, and we hope to share artworks that unify the people of Kyrgyzstan and invoke a sense of pride in them.
  • *Asanaliev Mairamkul Musabai (1965) is born in Kyrgyzstan.
    His works often involve letters, signs, and symbols of ancient Kyrgyzstan.
  • **Theodor Herzen (1935–2003) was a German born in Kyrgyzstan.
    He illustrates the lives of the Kyrgyz people in watercolor paintings and drawings.
  • Manas
    This artwork depicting Manas features an eagle that symbolizes the heaven, 40 mountain peaks that represent ancient tribes, savage beasts of the land, and a dragon of the water, with Manas at their center. The outer edge of the painting represents the universe, and the wave patterns (~) symbolizes the eternity of Manas.

    The painting shows Manas in his teenage years. He sits on a horse, holding a baton and wearing a Kalpak, the symbol of authority.

    The painting depicts Manas departing to conquer Beijing, China. Over his head is an eagle, a symbol of heaven, and a dragon under his feet, symbolizing the water.
