Fine Dining

What memories are set on your table?

The Asia Culture Center (ACC) presents two performances on the theme of “table and memory.”
In 2023, based on works with two directors, Kim Mi-ran (theater) and Yoo Sun-hoo (dance), selected through the directors’ competition,
the ACC completed this dance theater after more than a year of development.
On the table, an everyday object and place where we spend our daily lives,
personal and special narratives stemming from the director’s experiences, memories, and senses unfold.

Project Timeline +

It’s my father’s fancy days. Father’s golden age.

“Fine Dining” presents the story of the Director’s father, who once served as a head chef at an old-fashioned Western restaurant. The Director’s father, who moved to Seoul following the trend of urbanization, became the head chef of a fancy Western restaurant with hard work. However, industrialization and economic crises that arrived at the dining table shrank his kitchen and position. Despite his attempts to uphold his identity as a chef by making pork cutlets with his own recipe, he struggled to retain his individuality amid the urban environment. Over time, his work became increasingly standardized, losing its distinctiveness.

Why do I stay in the same place despite living so hard? What am I running toward?

As the father’s efforts intensify, the daughter and wife, who have been observing his trace of labor closely, feel increasingly alienated by the nature and significance of work. Who determines the tasks I undertake? Can the work I engage in be appraised? When selecting the type of work I desire, what responsibilities must I shoulder? What drives me to work? One evening, the family gathers around the dining table and engages in candid discussions about their lives, work, and aspirations. The table is set with seaweed soup prepared for the mom who recently gave birth, roasted chicken for the father, and pizza and spaghetti ordered for the mother who loves eating out.

Synopsis

The once cozy restaurant, adorned with glittering chandeliers and the warm glow of a fireplace, is now filled with loneliness and emptiness. The lights are on again, and Mi-ran, Yeong-hak’s daughter, and Yeong-hak’s friend Kyung-don (abbreviation for old-fashioned port cutlet in Korean) welcome the guests. Kyung-don, an object that was at the father’s workplace, and Mi-ran, who has been watching her father’s back as he struggles with work… They share their views on the father’s life as a Western chef in this space brimming with the memories of days when the smell of pork cutlets and brown sauce filled the air.

Writer and Director Kim Mi-ran
Having studied acting at the Seoul Institute of the Arts, Kim Mi-ran appeared on various theater stages. As she began to question the things that are taken for granted in the world, she expanded her area from actress to writer/director to explore the norms through her creative endeavors and convey them anew in performance pieces. She has been creating performances that capture specific and individual experiences and memories found deep within the universal objects or events around us, such as myself, my family, and the labor of city dwellers.
