Asia Culture Center (hereinafter referred to as 'ACC') is an international organization for arts creation and production, as well as cultural exchange, with its foundation in 'Asia'. It facilitates the expansion of innovative ideas through contemporary discourse on human cultural arts, thereby nurturing the emergence of futuristic creative work. The ACC aims to support the creation phases of performance works in a systematic manner prior to actual presentation, while also discovering experimental and innovative works through annual open call. In line with this goal, the ACC is currently recruiting creators and producers in the field of performing arts. These individuals are expected to present contemporary alternatives in the performing arts, showcasing creativity and focusing on theaters aspiring to become hubs for the creation and production of Asian performing arts. We hereby invite artists around the world with the capacity to contribute to the following themes and welcome the participation of any creative individuals who can take leadership roles in the performing arts field.
1. Overview
Overview
  • (Title) "Open Call: ACC International Theater Residency 2024"
  • (Themes) Artificial Intelligence, Humanity, and Multiverse
The 2024 ACC Residency Program explores the themes of 'Artificial Intelligence, Humanity, and Multiverse' with the aim of reconsidering the relationship between humans and non-humans. This exploration extends to both human-nonhuman and nonhuman-nonhuman relationships to uncover the underlying principles and meanings governing the world and universe within the complex network of relationships. Through this exploration, the program aims to contemplate the evolution of human life and consciousness, alongside advancements in artificial intelligence, all within the context of the multiverse rather than a singular universe. Additionally, it seeks to foster a comprehensive understanding about the future of humanity by reflecting a wide range of viewpoints from creators and producers.
  • (Participants) Four artists or artist groups (Teams are limited to a maximum of two members each.)
    ※ Each team is permitted to consist of up to two members, with project rewards and creative activity funds allocated to the designated representative individual.
  • (Field)
  • ①Creative field (Two artists or artist groups) - Performing arts creators including directors, choreographers, composers, and others
  • Eligible contestants are those who aim to utilize new media or pursue introducing new forms of viewing and realizing their performing arts.
【Examples】
  • A play work in which a digital medium or a stage device leads a play without an actor
  • A participatory play where the audience engages as actors rather than simply experiencing as passive spectators
  • A performance piece where the audience becomes an active subject and experiences different artistic experiences depending on personal choices
  • ② Playwriting field (Two artists or artist groups) – Writers capable of developing their ideas into concrete scripts
  • Eligible contestants are those dedicated to develop a script dealing with the subject of residency that can be developed as a repertoire work of the theater in the future.
  • (Project period) May 2024 ~ December 2024 (approx. 8 months)
  • Preparation period (project development phase prior to the residency period): May 2024 ~ August 2024 (approx. 4 months)
  • Residency period (project realization phase): September 2024 ~ November 2024 (approx. 3 months)
  • (Location) Asia Culture Center in Gwangju
  • (Project Showcase) November 23, 2024 / Arts Theater 1 (as split) and Atelier 1

  • *The program participants may utilize theatrical equipment and other devices during the showcase, subject to prior discussion.
    (Note: Only equipment owned by ACC for use is allowed for rental during their artistic performances, subject to prior discussion and coordination.)
  • *The project rewards encompass all necessary expenses for the presentation of the play performance.
  • *Project rewards and creative activity funds are paid solely to one designated representative, whether it is a team or an individual.
  • *The practice room operates according to the overall performance schedule of the ACC and may be subject to change at any time.
  • (Terms and Conditions of Support)
  • Provision of designated accommodation, a shared studio, and a practice room, and workspaces (*Adherence to the ACC operating rules is required.)
  • Regular meetings with the ACC for periodic review of research and development stages
  • Participation in planning, research, development, and production of performing arts projects utilizing the given workspace
  • Engagement in residency-related programs such as workshops, lectures, interviews, production and promotional events
  • Opportunities granted to present the concept, production and work outputs related to the project
    * Presentation events such as showcases, conferences, and readings for internal and external professionals to present the project outputs
    * Submission of a final report for work outputs
  • Prior consultation with the ACC in the event of disclosing the respective work outputs in the future, with the indication that they are work outputs of the 'ACC Residency Program'.
3. Application Method and Evaluation Process
  • (Submission period) March 14, 2024 (Thursday) ~ March 28, 2024 (Thursday), lasting for 2 weeks
  • (How to submit) Online registration through www.acc.go.kr
  • Closing date and time: March 28, 2024 (Thursday) at 17:00 KST
  • Be sure to complete your application by the deadline.
  • Any submitted documents will not be returned, and modifications are not allowed after submission (Your application number needs to be identified after submission).
  • Due to the anticipated surge in online system traffic from applicants nearing the deadline, it is advised to submit your application in advance before the deadline to avoid any issues.
  • (Submitted documents) Using designated formats is mandatory. (File name: ACC_R_applicant name.pdf, within 50MB).
  • One copy of the application form and project proposal (including an agreement for personal information collection and usage)
  • Portfolio (within 30 pages including a cover)
  • (Selection process)
  • 1st stage: Document screening
  • 2nd stage: Interview screening (10-minute presentation and 10-minute Q&A sessions)
    ※ The second stage of interviews is only applicable to the applicants who have successfully passed the document screening stage.

5. Qualification for Application
  • (Eligibility)
  • Artists who are 19 years of age or older and reside either in South Korea or internationally as of the announcement date
  • Individuals who possess the capability to develop theatrical works in the future while grasping the vision and values of the ACC
  • For any foreign individuals, those who are eligible for obtaining visas domestically without any disqualifying reasons

  • 1.In the case when a single applicant has applied with multiple projects that are found to be duplicate or split.
  • 2.In the case when an applicant has applied for any overlapping projects or performances receiving subsidies from other fund programs in 2023.
  • 3.Individuals or groups without a history of producing or staging artistic performances
  • 4.Individuals who are employed full-time by organizations, institutions, or companies during the required residency period

  • 5.Any revised or modified works that are deemed identical in form to previously announced works
  • 6.Regular concerts, festivals, or annual events
[Applicable provisions]
  • 7.Any individuals who have been penalized for conducting unfair practices as set forth in Article 6 Clause 2 of the 「Act on the Welfare of Artists」 in the Republic of Korea
  • 8.Any individuals who have been sentenced or placed under protective supervision for crimes under Article 2 of the 「Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Violence Crimes」 or Article 37 Clause 2 Number 2 of the 「Act on the Support for the Balancing of Work and Family Life for Both Sexes」, except in cases where the period specified in Article 7 of the 「Act on the Effective Execution of Sentences」 has elapsed
  • 9.In the case when any individuals are under investigation or prosecution for sexual harassment or sexual violence crimes, and if their involvement is deemed to hinder or cast uncertainty on the performance of the ACC project
  • If the aforementioned conditions are confirmed at a later stage, the selection will be revoked, and any support funds disbursed will be reclaimed.
6. Precautions
  • In the event of infringement of the intellectual property rights of others, the applicant is liable for civil and criminal consequences.
    ※ Any decision regarding selection will be nullified in the event of plagiarism of others' ideas or infringement of intellectual property rights.
  • Any selected participants are requested to adhere to the designated program management requirements through a separate contract.
  • Other matters will be governed by the Asia Culture Center Rules No. 66, while specific terms are stated in individual agreements.
  • If any of the following applies, be aware that there may be disadvantages such as cancellation of occupancy:
  • False information contained in the submitted documents
  • Inability to maintain residency program activities due to personal schedule
  • Existence of contagious diseases or other health issues to the extent that it is impossible to perform the ACC Residency Program
