Rain Clouds Cast Over the AsiaCulture Center

In May, visitors to the ACCwere treated to numerous concerts and performances. The weekend of the 20th and21st of May was no exception. For two days, MegaMendung, a contemporary dance concert, welcomed visitors.

Mega Mendung waschoreographed by Fitri Setyaningsih, an internationally acclaimed choreographerfrom Indonesia. After studying traditional dance in college, her interestshifted to original dance that expresses things in our daily lives. In otherwords, the combination of dance and visual art elements are what identify herwork. Many of her works have garnered international fame beyond Asia. Her Selamat Datang dari Bwah won the 2010Tokoh Seni Tempo, and she was named one of the influential artists in Indonesia by TEMPO weeklynewsmagazine in 2011.

Her latest work, Mega Mendung, originated from herchildhood memories. The show opens with a girl imaging herself flying amongclouds in the sky, and follows with shapes of rain clouds motivated bycirebonese batik, a form of traditional textile pattern in Indonesia. Differentshades of blue are displayed in harmony against a white background. In the sameway, the dance, choreography, stage design, and costumes of this program fillthe stage in harmony. Through diverse stage lighting and a unique set design, the choreographer depicts a world without gravity in the sky.

Dancers form shapes of Mega Mendung on the stage. Theirconstant movements provide a summary description of a series of events, whiledescribing characters that seem to belong in the celestial realm. The dancersprovide picturesque representations of various aspects from our lives by alternatingbetween more than three color tones. Their white costumes represent clouds intheir constant gathering and dispersion. The performers’ actions on the stagesometimes feel like dream-fantasies which, if you look closely enough, providea glimpse into the fine boundary between dream and reality.
